Relief, excitement, joy are all swimming through me right now. Today marked the end of a process, and the start to a new journey for Relay For Life of Emory University. After months of meetings, discussion, and effort, we were finally approved for an official charter. What does this mean for an organization as a whole? Simply put, we now have greater and more feasible access to the resources we need to make Relay as incredible as it can be. Whether this is something as simple as reserving a room on our own or the direct connections to Emory Catering Services, for example, being chartered allows us to be as effective as possible on our front as an organizing committee. This step allows us to celebrate, remember, and fight back with the Emory community in the most effective way we can. New doors are opening for us as an integral part of this campus and we cannot be more excited to see where this takes us.
The excitement does not stop at being chartered, however. After a few weeks of applications and interviews, the Executive Committee was selected and we held our first meeting this past Sunday with both committee chairs and committee members. With the introductions came the fun facts, and we learned that we have a child actor and a handful of Jets fans on our committee. Following intros came an overview and history of Relay For Life, in addition to how the money we raise affects the Emory community. Goals were set and calendars were marked before breaking off into individual committees to exchange contact information and availability. Though April 5, 2013 is 193 days away (but who's counting), the hard work and brainstorming has already begun. I cannot wait to see what this year has in store for us, both the 41 members of the committee and all of the Relayers in the Emory community. From Kickoff to the Closing Ceremony, from mission events to Bank Night and everything in between, I can already tell that this is going to be a great year for Relay For Life of Emory University!
