Undergraduate students, graduate
students, faculty, staff, and other members of the community flocked to
McDonough Field a little less than four months ago for twelve hours filled with
fun, emotion, remembrance, and hope. Whether time was passed by walking laps,
playing games, sampling the famous Oreo Balls from the swim team’s fundraiser,
or maybe even performing on stage, the unity in the air was obvious. As someone
who has watched Relay For Life of Emory University grow over the past three
years, I couldn’t be more proud of what was accomplished in 2012. The pride
does not only come from the efforts to raise $13,000 more than our original
$55,000 goal, but also from the hard work and time put into the event--whether
from an Executive Committee member, team captain, or participant. Though
summertime can sometimes prove to be a respite from our life at Emory, it’s
hard not to be itching to go back to our second home come mid-August. After a
summer filled with traveling and studying abroad, things have finally settled
down and my mind has wandered oftentimes to my upcoming senior year.
Mixed emotions float through me.
Disbelief that I am actually a senior and not just a lost freshman goofing
around in McTyeire Hall, nervousness about what lies beyond graduation,
enthusiasm for the upcoming soccer season, but most of all: excitement. For
interesting classes, for opportunity, for having the chance to help pioneer the
success of an organization as meaningful as Relay For Life. I hope this blog
provides insight into the work that the incredible, hard-working Executive
Committee does throughout the year in order to prepare for the upcoming Relay.
Not only that, but I hope that it helps build excitement for an event, cause,
and organization that is near and dear to many of our hearts. An immense amount
of gratitude is owed to those who participated last year, and I cannot wait to
see what Relay 2013 has in store! Hope all of our Relayers are having an
incredible summer, see you back in Atlanta soon enough!
